Class Memories From 1973

I guess the coolest hangout in my neck of the woods (E. Crockett St.) was Cain's drive-in. They had carhops and inside dining. Those kinds of places are classic car havens now but Cain's is no more in Beeville. Also if someone had a car or knew someone who did, the skating rink on one end of town and the bowling alley on the other were cool spots to see friends. Of course the Friday night football games, watching the Trojans play were the best. Chase Field was still at full speed and lots of action from the Navy families from all over the country. At that time I think the King Bee restaurant was the only place that stayed open all night. I remember a few bleary eyed stops there for coffee afte too much partying!

I remember a fight between a student and a teacher while in the 9th grade. I don't remember the boy's name but the teacher was my weird, hyper algebra teacher, Mr. Bradford. The boy had his shirttail out and that went against the dress code. It was between classes. Mr. Bradford grabbed this kid's arm and told him to go into the guy's restroom and tuck his shirttail in. The boy told him to let go and said, flat out "no!" That made Bradford even madder so he pushed the boy towards the restroom and once again told him to tuck his shirttail in. The boy swung at Bradford, Bradford grabbed him by the collar and off they went to the Principal's office. I guess in demonstrating what happened Bradford decked the kid in front of the Principal and knocked him out! Mr. McGill gave Bradford the choice of resigning or being fired. Needless to say we had a sub for our algebra class instructor the rest of the year. I'm not sure what happened to the boy but no more nutty Bradford to contend with! That had to top any fight between students I ever got to witness!

The hottest guy, to me, when I was in 9th grade was Philip (one "L") Young. I loved his black hair and blue, blue eyes! I would write him notes and put into his locker. He finally caught me and once I even talked to him on the phone. I went with Wes Taylor but fantasized about Philip, who reminded me, in a way, of Jim Morrison and was just a fantasy, as he was an upper-classman and from a well-to-do family. He was nice, though and I often wonder what happened to him.

Plenty of those all over town on Friday and Satuday nights if you knew where to look. My Mom & I had a lot of parties for my friends. Back then it was okay for a parent to buy the booze and let the underage kids drink as long as they stayed on our property but most of my friends in the early '70's were older, in their 20's already. Some going to the college, some not. Wild times for sure, never to be lived again. I'm so glad I grew up where I did, when I did!

Wasn't J.K's, across from A.C. Jones, THE place to go when you were in school and didn't want cafeteria food? They had a juke box with country ("s**t kicker", as us hippies called it then)or rock 'n roll. But then if you had a car you went to Cain's drive-in or just cruising. We had an open campus so you could leave for an hour if you wanted to.
